Web Push vs. Email vs. SMS: Which Channel Should You Use?
31 Aug 2026 · Admin
Every site owner eventually asks the same question: should I invest in email, SMS, or web push notifications? The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and the best strategy usually combines more than one.
Speed and visibility
Web push notifications appear instantly on the visitor's screen, with no inbox to check and no spam folder to compete with. Email can sit unread for days; SMS is fast but costs money per message and requires a phone number you often don't have.
Cost
Push notifications are essentially free to send at scale — no per-message cost like SMS, and no need to build an email list with double opt-in. You only need a browser permission, which most visitors already understand.
Where email and SMS still win
Email remains better for long-form content, invoices, and anything that needs a permanent record. SMS still wins for extremely time-sensitive, high-value alerts (e.g. a delivery arriving in 10 minutes) where you're willing to pay a premium for guaranteed visibility.
Our recommendation
Start with web push for anything time-sensitive and promotional — it's the lowest-friction channel to set up, and it recovers visitors who would otherwise never come back. Layer email and SMS on top once you understand what drives engagement for your specific audience.
